GM introduced the H3 in 2006 as an entry-level Hummer. It features styling that is strikingly similar to its older brother, the H2. If it weren't for the H3's broader fender flares the casual spotter might have a tough time telling them apart.

The 2009 H3 also shares the H2's off-road prowess. Short overhangs, aggressive approach and departure angles and 9 inches of ground clearance help navigate rough terrain. The standard rear axle is a tall 4.56 ratio, and the standard push-button transfer case has a 2.64 crawl ratio. Customers may also opt for an even taller 4:1 transfer case and a full-locking rear axle for extra-slow rock crawling. The 2009 H3 is able to ford 24 inches at 5 mph and 16 inches at 20 mph.

The H3 is built on GM's Canyon/Colorado platform, but with a sturdier frame and specially tuned shocks. The H3 also features a 2-speed transfer case and electronically controlled 4-wheel-drive system with traction control. The 2009 H3 also rides on the enormous 32 inch P265/75R16 all terrain steel belted tires with a full-size spare.

The 2009 Hummer shares its 3.7L inline 5-cylinder engine with its pickup siblings, and it generates 239 horsepower and 241 ft-lbs of torque. The standard transmission is a 5-speed manual, but Hummer does offer an electronic 4-speed automatic transmission.

The standard suspension setup, the Z85 Handling/Trailering system, should be sufficient for most users. Those looking to test their H3s in the field will be interested in the ZM6 Off-Road Adventure suspension. This option includes a full-locking rear differential, the steeper 4:1 ratio transfer case and special off-road shocks.

Hummer introduced a pickup version of the H3 this year, called the H3T. It features all of the off-road and styling appeal of the original H3, but with a short 32" open bed in back.

A number of optional packages can dress up the 2009 H3. the H3X option adds all manner of interior and exterior visual enhancements, including a crome full-filler door and bright roof rack crossbar, while the H3 Alpha option adds a 300-horsepower 5.3L V8, a 4.10 rear axle ratio, and a larger alternator. An uplevel Décor option upgrades the front seats to heated power leather.

The H3 comes with an array of options including leather appointed seating, a 6-disc CD changer, an audio system with navigation, Bluetooth capability, Satellite radio, chromed aluminum wheels, rearview camera system and a power sunroof.
The 2009 Hummer H3 adds the H3T to its lineup for 2009. The HT3 adds a crew cab pick up truck body style to the H3 roster. The 2009 Hummer H3 price base price increased about $1750 over last year.

The 2009 Hummer H3 may be smaller than the H2, but it is no less imposing wherever it shows its massive chrome grille. Physically, it is only 6-inches shorter, 3-inches shorter, and 2,600 pounds lighter. The H3 is priced at $29,630 less than the H2, making it a real value in Hummer-per-dollar. The 2009 Hummer H3 continues its focus on off-road by providing capibilities and features geared toward the off-road enthusiast.
